The Louvre, on west side, was a mere castle, with a big tower on the river Seine, facing the tour de Nesles. It became under the reign of Charles V (1338-1380) the new royal palace, enlarged and embellished generation by generation. The medieval basis is visible inside the actual museum, called the « Grand Louvre », since the spectacular transformations of the 1990s (pyramide).
